What should I do if my email doesn't work?

There are many reasons why the email system may stop working. Downtime in the work of e-mail can be planned and unplanned. Scheduled outages are when the email system is closed for maintenance or an update. Patch management, physical server relocation, or system shutdown for testing can also be placed in this category. The JINR network service conducts all planned shutdowns during non-working hours, after 1800 or on holidays and weekends, after notifying about it on the website.

Unlike scheduled email downtime, unplanned downtime can take you by surprise. They are also much more complex for accurate diagnosis. When such a problem occurs, its causes can range from hardware or software problems to hacking an attack, or a human error that can cause the system to malfunction. Natural phenomena and various accidents also should not be neglected.

Mail messages arriving in the user's mailbox and stored in mail databases may contain viruses. Malware they can be both in the attachment of the letter and in its body. When opening a letter, when saving a file attached to the letter to disk, you can infect data on your computer. Also, mail correspondence can become a source of two more threats: spam and phishing. If spam entails mainly loss of time, then the purpose of phishing emails is your confidential information (for example, credit card number).

The JINR network service has organized an anti-virus check of the mail stream. All emails received and sent by the server are subject to anti-virus control mail.jinr.ru. If a virus, Trojan or Internet worm is detected in the letter, the delivery of the letter is blocked with notification of the sender, recipient and the administrator of the mail server. The antivirus database is updated daily and currently has over 1 million virus signatures/malicious links.

However, this is also not enough because not all users follow our recommendations and get simple passwords, not taking into account the minimum recommendations of the network service. In this case, the network service is forced to block compromised accounts. Then the user stops working mail service, i.e. it cannot log into its mailbox with existing credentials (username/password).

What should I do in this case?

The most important thing is not to worry, your mail will not be lost, and now no one will be able to use it.
Refer to responsible for the Laboratory/department or go to room 200 LIT to change the password.

When composing passwords, it is recommended to adhere to the following rules:
      • The password must contain at least eight characters.
      • It is recommended to compose a password from a mixed set of numeric and alphabetic (uppercase and lowercase) characters. The password may include numbers, Latin letters, spaces and special characters (".", ",", "?", "!", "<", ">". """, etc.).
      • Рекомендуется составлять пароль из смешанного набора цифровых и буквенных (прописных и строчных) символов.

Do not use as a password:

      • Common words and stable phrases.
      • Sets of characters representing combinations of keys arranged in a row on the keyboard.
      • Personal data: first and last names, addresses, passport numbers, insurance certificates, etc., passwords created to access other programs (e-mail, databases, etc.).

We take care of your mail!

      With respect,
      JINR Network Service.
