What I have to do if JINR email service does not work?

There are many reasons why an e-mail system may stop working. Then we may talk about two types of e-mail downtime: planned and unplanned. Scheduled (or planned) outages are when the e-mail system is unavailable for users due to prescheduled maintenance or hardware or software upgrade. Patch management, physical moving of the servers, or shutting down the system for tests can also be placed in this category. All scheduled shutdowns are performed by the JINR network service during off-hours, after 18:00 o’clock or on holidays and on weekends, having previously notified JINR users about an event.

Unlike the planned downtime of e-mail, unplanned outages can take any of us by surprise. Naturally it takes time to estimate the problem and to solve it. When such a problem occurs, its causes can range from hardware or software problems to hacker attacks. Human errors also can cause the system to malfunction.

The JINR network mail service provides an anti-virus scanning of all incoming and outgoing mail messages. In case of detection of a virus, Trojan or Internet worm in the letter, the delivery of the message is blocked with notification of the sender, recipient and administrator of the mail server. The anti-virus database is updated daily and currently has over 1 million signatures of viruses / malicious links. However, this is not enough yet because not all users follow our recommendations and continue to use simple passwords, not following the recommendations of the network service regarding passwords. In this case, the network service is forced to block compromised accounts.

What to do in this particular case?

Most importantly - please do not worry, your mail will not be lost, and now no one can be able to use it. Contact the laboratory or department responsible specialist or visit the room 200 in LIT for the procedure of changing your compromised password.

When creating a new password, you are recommended to follow these simple rules:

      • The password must contain at least eight characters.
      • The password should include numbers, Latin letters, spaces or special characters (".", ",", "?", "!", "<", ">". "" ", Etc.). Everyone has to create the strong password.
      • It is strongly recommended to create a new password from a mixed set of digital and alphabetic (uppercase and lowercase) characters.

Do not use as a password:

      • Common words and stable popular phrases.
      • Character sets, which are combinations of keys, arranged consecutively on the keyboard.
      • Personal data: names and surnames, addresses, passport numbers, insurance certificates, etc., passwords created for access to other programs (e-mail, databases, etc.).

      We care about your e-mail!

      Yours faithfully,
      Networking service of JINR
